Standard band: $3.06 to $3.87.
Items priced under $10.00 fall onto Amazon’s cheaper Low-Price FBA rate card, so the band above changes as soon as your price crosses that line. Weight moves the fee within the band, so confirm your exact figure in Seller Central before committing to a price.
Charged on cubic feet, and higher in Q4.
Freight to the fulfilment centre, split across the shipment.
Most categories carries a published referral rate of 15%. Sub-categories and media items are sometimes charged differently, so overwrite the rate if yours is.
Referral percentages are Amazon’s published US rates as of August 2026. Rates vary by marketplace, category and account, and fulfilment and storage fees change with size tier, season and programme enrolment. Treat this as an indicative figure for pricing decisions rather than an accounting reconciliation.
The calculator models referral, fulfilment and storage, which cover most sellers. These are the other charges that can appear, shown as published US ranges so you know what to look for.

It estimates what you keep on a unit after Amazon takes its cut. The calculator deducts the referral fee, the FBA fulfilment fee, monthly storage, your inbound freight and your product cost, then reports net profit, profit margin and return on investment. Those last two answer different questions, so the tool shows both.
There are three main ones. The referral fee is a percentage of the sale price and applies to every order whether you use FBA or not. The fulfilment fee is a flat per-unit charge for picking, packing and shipping the order. Monthly storage is charged on the cubic feet your inventory occupies. On top of those sit optional and situational charges such as returns processing, removals, labelling and long-term storage.
It is a percentage of the total sale price, and that total includes any shipping or gift wrap the buyer pays, not just the item price. A $30 item with $5 of buyer-paid shipping in a 15% category is charged on $35, so the referral fee is $5.25 rather than $4.50. Most categories also carry a minimum referral fee of $0.30 per unit, which is what bites on very cheap items.
Most categories sit at 15%. Electronics, computers, video game consoles and cameras and photo are 8%. Clothing is 17%, jewellery and fine art are 20%, and Amazon device accessories are 45%, the highest of the lot. Grocery is 8% below $15 and 15% at or above it, while health and personal care uses the same split at a $10 break.
Take a $29.99 product in a 15% category. The referral fee is 15% of $29.99, which is $4.50. Add a $5.10 fulfilment fee and $0.35 of storage and Amazon takes $9.95. Add $0.50 of inbound freight and $8.00 of product cost and your total cost is $18.45, leaving $11.54 of profit. That is a 38% margin on the sale price and roughly a 63% return on the $18.45 you spent.
They are banded, not proportional. Amazon measures the packaged unit, assigns it a size tier such as small standard, large standard or one of the oversize bands, then charges a flat fee based on that tier and the shipping weight. Because the bands are steps rather than a smooth curve, shaving a fraction of an inch or an ounce off your packaging can move you into a cheaper tier and cut the fee outright. Check your own figure in Seller Central, since the tiers and rates are revised regularly.
Because guessing it would be worse than asking. The fulfilment fee depends on dimensions and weight that only you know, the tier table runs to dozens of rows, and Amazon updates it more than once a year. The default of $5.10 is a reasonable stand-in for a small standard-size unit, but replace it with the fee Amazon quotes on your own listing.
Monthly storage is charged per cubic foot of inventory held in a fulfilment centre, so bulky low-value items are punished hardest. Rates rise sharply in the fourth quarter, typically more than tripling for October to December, because warehouse space is scarce in peak season. Divide your monthly storage bill by the units you expect to sell that month to get the per-unit figure this calculator asks for.
Amazon charges an extra aged inventory surcharge on units that have sat in a fulfilment centre beyond a set age, usually starting after several months and climbing the longer stock lingers. It is designed to stop sellers using fulfilment centres as cheap warehousing. If a product is slow moving, either discount it, create a removal order or bring it home before the surcharge overtakes the margin.
Many established sellers run 15% to 25% net margin after all Amazon fees, and treat anything under 10% as too fragile to survive a fee increase or a price war. Margin alone is not the whole story though, because it says nothing about how fast your money comes back.
A large number of sellers use 30% return on investment as the minimum bar for reordering, and many hold out for 50% or more on private label. ROI divides profit by what you actually spent, so a $10 profit on $20 of total cost is 50% ROI even though the margin might look modest. It matters because a product with lower margin but faster turns can generate more cash per year than a high margin product that sells twice a month.
It depends on your unit economics and your time. Fulfilled by Merchant avoids the FBA fulfilment and storage fees entirely, but you still pay the referral fee, and you take on picking, packing, postage and customer service yourself. FBA usually wins on small, light, fast moving items where the flat fee undercuts what you would pay in postage, and where Prime eligibility lifts conversion. Bulky, slow moving or very cheap items are often better fulfilled yourself.
