Email and SMS are where a loyalty program actually talks to customers: the points-earned email, the store credit reminder, the text that tells someone they've reached a new tier. The app you choose decides how easy those messages are to build, and what they cost as your list grows.
This guide is written by Graeme, co-founder of Mage, a loyalty and store credit platform for Shopify. Mage partners with all five companies on this list and integrates with Klaviyo, Omnisend, Postscript and Attentive.
Our quick picks
- Best for getting started, and best value: Judge.me Email Marketing. Free for your first 15,000 emails a month, the only app here that runs inside the Shopify admin, and $15 a month to send from your own domain.
- Best for enterprise brands: Klaviyo. The most capable flows, segments and customer data, plus an AI assistant that drafted a campaign for me in under a minute. Also the most expensive.
- Best for enterprise brands where SMS drives repeat sales: Attentive. Klaviyo, but for SMS, with a managed service and a contract.
- Best budget-friendly email and SMS app: Omnisend. Simpler and less overwhelming than Klaviyo, with a free plan and SMS on its Pro plan.
- Best for SMS only: Postscript. An easy flow builder and pay-per-message pricing. Its email feature is new.

How I researched these apps
I've worked with Klaviyo for over a year, across client brands including MiaDonna, Youswim, Love Sweat Fitness and Gelato Pique. We've worked with Omnisend, Postscript and Attentive for about nine months each through Mage's integrations. Judge.me Email is the newest app here: I installed it and built a campaign, segments and sending rules myself. The screenshots are my own, captured in October 2026, apart from Omnisend's and Postscript's pricing, which come from their App Store listings.
I also read every App Store review in our sample for each app: 671 reviews in total, collected on 16 October 2026. The sample includes every low rating on purpose, so it reads more negative than each app's average, and I say where a sample is small. Those findings sit in each app's "What merchants report" section, kept separate from my own experience.
These are the factors that decide the choice for most stores:
- What you pay as you grow. Klaviyo and Omnisend charge by the size of your list, Judge.me Email by emails sent, Postscript by texts sent, and Attentive by contract.
- Email, SMS or both. Three of these apps do both in one place. Postscript is SMS first and Judge.me Email is email only.
- How much platform you need. Klaviyo and Attentive are built for enterprise brands. Judge.me Email and Omnisend are simpler to run.
- Loyalty fit. Whether your loyalty data, such as points balance, store credit and VIP tier, reaches the app so every message can use it.
1. Judge.me Email Marketing: best for getting started with email
Best for: brands starting out with email, and larger brands that want a simpler email tool that lives inside Shopify.
Pricing: Free for your first 15,000 emails each billing period (campaigns and flows count together), then $0.15 per 1,000 emails. The Awesome plan is $15 a month and adds sending from your own domain, a custom "From" address and removal of Judge.me branding (Judge.me help center, 10 September 2026).
App Store rating: 5.0 from 47 reviews (as of 16 October 2026).
Judge.me Email is perfect if you're just getting started. It's so easy to use and doesn't feel enterprise, yet it covers pretty much everything you need, arguably even for 8 to 9-figure brands that just want a simpler email experience. It's also the only app in this list that runs inside the Shopify admin rather than on its own platform. I installed it and built a Black Friday campaign, a custom segment and the sending rules.
Setting it up
The app opens inside Shopify, with a three-stage setup checklist on its home page: set up your brand (about five minutes), activate your automations, enable Judge.me on your storefront and set up your sign-up popup. A meter shows how many of your 15,000 free emails you've used this billing period and what you would pay. If you'd rather not do it alone, Judge.me offers a free 30-minute call to walk you through setup.

What your customers see
You set your logo, colours, fonts and buttons once, and every template picks them up. The template library has eight ready-made emails, each with a desktop and mobile preview. Sign-up popups and back-in-stock alerts are switched on through the app embed in your theme.

Flows and campaigns
Campaigns take three steps: audience, content, review and send. For the audience, you pick from your Shopify customer segments, here abandoned checkouts in the last 30 days and three purchase-based segments, and choose whether to combine them with AND or OR. It sends to everyone in the chosen segments once, with no duplicates. There's a link to create a new segment in Shopify without leaving the campaign.

The editor builds an email from sections (header, text, button, footer) that you reorder by dragging, with a desktop and mobile toggle, a preview using a real customer's data, a test send and a "save as template" button. Judge.me also builds its own segments from email engagement. It comes with presets such as "Lapsed (no opens in 90 days)" and "Purchased from email (last 90 days)", and I added a custom one for anyone who opened or clicked in the last 60 days. Six ready-made automations, including abandoned checkout, welcome and win-back, come with the Free plan (App Store listing).

Running it day to day
The sending rules page has the controls you'd expect from a bigger platform. My account's limit showed up to 50,000 emails a day, shared between campaigns and automations. Judge.me's help center says new stores start lower and rise as they build a sending history, and you can request an increase from the same page. Smart Sending is on, with a 16-hour window between marketing emails to the same customer. Double opt-in is one switch away. Support is great: you message Judge.me's team directly and aren't put in front of an AI, even on the Free plan.

What merchants report
Judge.me Email launched in July 2026, so I could read all 47 of its App Store reviews, collected on 16 October 2026. That is a small, new sample: 46 are five stars and no reviewer had used it for more than about two months. Support comes up in two thirds of them, often a named person who ran a setup call. Pricing comes up in about a third: merchants like paying per email sent rather than per contact, and four say they moved from Klaviyo. The few complaints are about the popup, including one store that couldn't limit it to certain pages.
Drawbacks
- It's new, so it's still missing a lot of features compared with Klaviyo, though it's catching up quickly.
- The interface doesn't feel enterprise. The trade-off is that it's easy to use.
- Engagement segments don't work everywhere yet. Judge.me's help center says segments built from email engagement can't yet be used in flows or popups.
Honestly, it's hard to fault for the price: free for your first 15,000 emails, and $15 a month to send from your own domain without Judge.me branding.
If you need SMS in the same app, choose Omnisend or Klaviyo. If you need the deepest automation and segmentation, choose Klaviyo.
Judge.me Email Marketing on the Shopify App Store
2. Klaviyo: best for enterprise brands that want the deepest automation
Best for: growing and enterprise brands that want the most capable flows, segments and customer data, and can absorb the cost.
Pricing: Free up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month, with $5 of SMS and $5 of Composer (AI) usage included (klaviyo.com, 16 October 2026). Email is $20 a month for up to 500 active profiles, $100 at 5,000 and $400 at 25,000 (checked against a live Klaviyo account, August 2026). SMS starts at $15 a month for 1,250 credits, carrier fees included (App Store listing, 16 October 2026). You are billed on active profiles, not subscribers.
App Store rating: 4.7 from 3,394 reviews (as of 16 October 2026).
Klaviyo is the email platform I see most across the brands we support at Mage, and it is the one I would put an enterprise brand on. It is also the most expensive app here, and for a small store it can feel like more than you need. I've worked with Klaviyo for over a year.
Setting it up
Klaviyo walks you through setup with a "Get started" guide in the admin. It puts connecting your store at about 15 minutes, a sign-up form at about 10 and a welcome series at about 15, and ticks each one off as you go.

What your customers see
You can build emails in a drag-and-drop editor, or write them in code for extra flexibility, and both are easy to use. The code view shows a live preview beside the HTML. The concept email below is a VIP tier upgrade email that pulls in the customer's new tier, the benefits it unlocks and the next tier above it.

A concept email built for testing.
Flows and campaigns
The flow builder is where Klaviyo earns its place. It is easy to use rather than overwhelming: you drag emails, texts, WhatsApp messages, delays and splits onto the canvas and connect them, and any event Klaviyo receives can start a flow.

The newer addition is Composer, Klaviyo's AI assistant. I asked it to "create a campaign for customers who have more than 500 points balance". It found the existing points segment on its own, then produced a draft campaign and an email template in under a minute (the panel shows 44 seconds). A few minor edits and about another minute later, the campaign was ready to send. Composer is usage-priced, with $5 a month included on the Free plan.

Running it day to day
Managing customers is easy. Each profile shows the full event history, custom properties, and metrics and insights in one place. Klaviyo also includes its own reviews product. We use it with The GoTo, and it covers review requests, product widgets, star ratings and importing, though it is less extensive than a dedicated reviews app.
What merchants report
I read all 220 Klaviyo reviews in our sample, collected on 16 October 2026. The sample deliberately includes every low rating, so it reads far more negative than the 4.7 average. Flows are the clearest strength: 21 reviews praise them, and none of the 5 complaints is from 2026. Even a two-star review from January 2026 says Klaviyo "excels in segmentation, flow triggers, and flow charts". Pricing is what merchants complain about most: it comes up in 21 of the 42 low reviews from the past year. "Last year, my monthly price went from 80usd to 150usd," one wrote in May 2026. Support is second (17 of the 42), mostly from merchants on the Free plan, where email support ends after 60 days.
Drawbacks
- It's expensive. Billing counts every active profile, meaning anyone you could email, not only people who opted in to marketing, so the bill grows with your customer list. 25,000 profiles costs $400 a month for email alone.
- It can be overwhelming. For a brand that isn't enterprise-sized, Klaviyo feels big next to Omnisend or Judge.me Email.
- Support on smaller plans is thin, according to the reviews I read: the Free plan's email support ends after 60 days.
If you're a small store or budget comes first, start with Omnisend or Judge.me Email. If you only care about SMS, look at Postscript.
Using Klaviyo with Mage
The Mage Klaviyo integration syncs each member's points balance and its cash value, lifetime and redeemed points, and next VIP tier to their Klaviyo profile, and Mage events such as points awarded can start flows. MiaDonna, Youswim, Love Sweat Fitness and Gelato Pique send their loyalty emails this way: welcome, points or store credit earned, expiry reminders, reward redeemed and tier upgrades. For Youswim (from Yotpo) and Love Sweat Fitness (from Bubblehouse) we adapted their existing emails to Mage data. Other brands set theirs up from our help docs and test events, in a day to a couple of weeks.

3. Attentive: best for enterprise brands where SMS drives repeat sales
Best for: enterprise brands where SMS plays a big part in marketing to existing customers, with email alongside it.
Pricing: No public price. The App Store listing offers a minimum 30-day free trial, then a month-to-month or long-term agreement (as of 16 October 2026). Vendr's buyer data puts the median contract at about $40,000 a year, ranging from $1,800 to $72,000 (an estimate, February 2026).
App Store rating: 4.7 from 112 reviews (as of 16 October 2026).
We've worked with Attentive for about nine months through the Mage integration. The best way I can describe it is Klaviyo, but for SMS: the interface feels enterprise and fully fledged, and everything is built around the text message first, with email alongside it.
Setting it up
Attentive is sales-led. The listing is free to install, but there is no plan to pick: you start a trial of at least 30 days and then agree terms. In the reviews I read, one merchant who moved from Klaviyo at the end of 2025 called the migration "seamless" (March 2026).
What your customers see
The text message editor shows a live phone preview beside the message as you write, along with a character count and how many SMS segments the message will use, which is what you pay for. You can add emoji, links, personalisation, images and GIFs, and an AI panel suggests alternative copy. The editor also flags when a message isn't set up for click tracking before you send it.

Flows and campaigns
Attentive calls its flows journeys, and the builder is easy to use. You drag steps onto the map: send a text, send an auto-reply, add a custom attribute, wait, branch, A/B test or end the journey. Entry frequency, exit rules and a test mode sit along the top. Campaigns can be one-time texts, recurring text campaigns or A/B tests.
What stands out is how prominent Smart Sending is. It's switched on inside each message step, with the limit spelled out (one text every 8 hours), and Quiet Hours sits right below it.

Running it day to day
Segments are built from conditions, such as subscribed to text in the last 365 days, living in the United States or Canada, and having made a purchase in that time. The reports library covers the program, subscriber growth, journeys, campaigns and segments. It also includes a Revenue and Costs group with a daily message cost report and campaign spend details, which is where you would keep an eye on what you're paying per text.

What merchants report
I read 85 of Attentive's 112 App Store reviews, including every review under five stars, collected on 16 October 2026. The managed service is what merchants praise most: 64 of the 85 mention support, often a named account manager or strategy calls. "I can't speak highly enough about their white glove support and dedicated CSMs," one wrote in November 2025. Most reviewers came to Attentive for SMS and moved email over later. The complaints from the past two years are about contracts and billing rather than the product, including a January 2026 review describing "strict SMS exclusivity with long-term lock-in". Attentive has not replied to a review since August 2024.
Drawbacks
- You can't see a price without a sales conversation. The listing shows no pricing, only the trial and then an agreement.
- It's built for enterprise. Like Klaviyo, it's more than a small brand needs.
- If email is your main channel, Klaviyo is the stronger pick. Attentive's strength is SMS.
If you're a smaller brand, or SMS is only a small part of your marketing, start with Omnisend or Klaviyo. If you want SMS without a contract, look at Postscript.
Using Attentive with Mage
The Mage Attentive integration syncs loyalty data to each Attentive subscriber as custom attributes: points balance and its cash value, lifetime and redeemed points, VIP tier, the next tier and how far away it is. Those attributes work in segments, branches and message personalisation. Mage events can also start journeys. The journey below starts when Mage awards points, texts the customer that they've earned $5 in store credit, then waits an hour before the next step.

4. Omnisend: best budget-friendly email and SMS app
Best for: brands that want email and SMS in one app at a lower price than Klaviyo, and a tool that feels simpler to run.
Pricing: Free for up to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Standard is $16 a month for up to 500 contacts and 6,000 emails, and Pro is $59 a month for up to 2,500 contacts with unlimited email. Both rise as your list grows, with 30% off the first three months. SMS is added on Pro from $0.007 a message (App Store listing and omnisend.com, 16 October 2026).
App Store rating: 4.7 from 3,190 reviews (as of 16 October 2026).
We've worked with Omnisend for about nine months through the Mage integration. It's the budget-friendly option in this list, and next to Klaviyo it feels simpler and less overwhelming.

Omnisend's plans as listed on the Shopify App Store, 16 October 2026.
Setting it up
You install Omnisend from the Shopify App Store and are then taken out to Omnisend's own platform for a quick onboarding. It prompts you to enable the app embed in your theme and fill in a few basic details about your store, and then you're in. Unlike Attentive, there is no sales conversation first: the Free plan is there from the start.
What your customers see
Sign-up popups and forms come with the Free plan, along with more than 250 email templates you can customise. On the paid plans you can remove Omnisend's branding from emails and forms, and Standard adds an AI tool that builds a popup from a description (App Store listing). Web push notifications are unlimited from Standard.
Flows and campaigns
The automation builder and the email editor are intuitive, and the whole app feels simpler and less overwhelming than Klaviyo. Abandoned cart and welcome automations come with the Free plan, and Free also lets you describe a segment and have Omnisend's built-in AI create it (App Store listing).
Running it day to day
When I contacted Omnisend support through its chat, a bot answered first, but it was fast to hand me to a human agent; it doesn't make you fight for one. The listing promises 24/7 live support even on the Free plan, and accounts on $400 a month or more get time with an email expert. Pro adds advanced reporting and a product recommender.
What merchants report
I read all 209 Omnisend reviews in our sample, collected on 16 October 2026. The sample includes every low rating, so it reads more negative than the 4.7 average. Ease of use is the most common praise, and several 2026 reviews compare it directly with Klaviyo: "I found it overwhelming and complicated. Omnisend is plug and play," one merchant wrote in August 2026. Support praise usually names an agent. Billing is the long-running complaint, with 52 reviews over the app's history saying the bill grew with contacts rather than sends. A smaller cluster of 2026 reviews describes accounts frozen by Omnisend's compliance checks, with no reason given.
Drawbacks
- Billing counts contacts, not just subscribers. Omnisend's pricing counts non-subscribers who received automated messages, such as people who abandoned a cart, and the $16 Standard price only covers your first 500 contacts.
- Support starts with a bot. It hands you to a person quickly, but if you want a named expert, that comes on plans of $400 a month or more.
If you need the deepest segmentation and flows, or you're an enterprise brand, Klaviyo is the stronger choice. If SMS is your main channel, look at Postscript or Attentive.
Using Omnisend with Mage
The Mage Omnisend integration syncs loyalty data to each Omnisend contact: points balance, lifetime and redeemed points, VIP tier and enrollment date, which you can use in segments, splits and personalisation. Mage also sends custom events, such as points awarded, reward redeemed and points expiring soon, that can start Omnisend automations. Brands that run store credit get store credit versions of the earning and expiry events. Omnisend lists a custom event once it has fired, so Mage's "Send Test Event" button is the quickest way to set one up.
Omnisend on the Shopify App Store
5. Postscript: best for brands that only care about SMS
Best for: brands whose priority is SMS, and who want a capable SMS platform that feels lighter than the enterprise options.
Pricing: Starter is free to install with a $49 monthly minimum spend, then $0.009 per SMS and $0.045 per MMS plus carrier fees. Growth is $100 a month ($0.008 per SMS) and Professional is $500 a month ($0.007 per SMS). Every plan gets $100 of credit for the first 30 days, and Growth and Professional have a 30-day free trial (App Store listing, 16 October 2026).
App Store rating: 4.7 from 1,207 reviews (as of 16 October 2026).
We've worked with Postscript for about nine months through the Mage integration, on both campaigns and automated flows. If SMS is all you care about, it's the one I'd point you to. It feels less enterprise and less overwhelming than Attentive.

Postscript's plans as listed on the Shopify App Store, 16 October 2026.
Setting it up
You install Postscript from the App Store and can start on Starter, which is free to install. Every plan includes its own toll-free number, and the $100 of credit for the first 30 days covers your first sends. In the reviews I read, one merchant who switched from Klaviyo in October 2026 wrote that Postscript "migrated all our email flows / contacts".
What your customers see
Your customers see texts from your own toll-free number, plus whatever sign-up tools you put on the store. The subscriber acquisition tools come with every plan, Growth adds unlimited opt-in keywords, and Professional adds customisable opt-in tools and a branded short link (App Store listing). One merchant called out being able to A/B test popups "to see which ones get the best opt-ins" (May 2025).
Flows and campaigns
The flow builder is easy to use: a flowchart you build step by step, similar to Attentive's but less overwhelming. We use it for both one-off campaigns and automated flows, and segments are unlimited on every plan.
Email is the open question. Postscript has recently released an email feature, but it's too soon to tell whether it's worth using over Klaviyo or Omnisend. On 16 October 2026 its pricing page still listed email behind a waitlist, so check whether it's available on your account.
Running it day to day
Reporting and integrations come with every plan. Support depends on what you pay: Starter gets the help centre, Growth adds live chat and email support, and Professional adds an onboarding specialist, a dedicated customer success manager and priority support (App Store listing).
What merchants report
I read all 110 Postscript reviews in our sample, collected on 16 October 2026. The sample includes every review under four stars, so it reads more negative than the 4.7 average. Older reviews, from 2020 to mid-2024, are full of praise for fast chat support, often naming the person who helped. More recent ones are less positive: since January 2025, 13 of the 17 dated reviews are three stars or below, though that's a small sample. Two themes recur. One is reaching a human: "AI support is helpful for basic questions, but when an issue requires more attention, customers should have an easy way to connect with a human representative" (October 2026). The other is billing, including minimum charges and credits lost after plan changes.
Drawbacks
- The email feature is new. It hasn't been tested over long periods the way Klaviyo's and Omnisend's email has.
- Support depends on your plan. Live chat and email support start on Growth at $100 a month; Starter gets the help centre (App Store listing).
If email is your main channel, choose Klaviyo or Omnisend. If you're an enterprise brand that wants a managed SMS program, look at Attentive.
Using Postscript with Mage
The Mage Postscript integration syncs loyalty data to each Postscript subscriber, including points balance, lifetime and redeemed points, VIP tier and enrollment date, for segments and personalised texts. Mage events, such as points awarded, reward redeemed and points expiring soon, can start Postscript automations. Events are matched by Shopify customer ID, falling back to email, and only send to SMS subscribers. Several are off by default, so switch on the ones you need in Mage.
Postscript on the Shopify App Store
One platform or two for email and SMS?
Klaviyo, Omnisend and Attentive send email and SMS from one app, with one customer profile and one set of flows. Postscript is SMS first, with an email feature that is still new, and Judge.me Email is email only, so either of those pairs with a second app.
- If email does most of the work, one platform keeps things simple: Klaviyo at the enterprise end, Omnisend if budget comes first.
- If SMS is a big part of how you market to existing customers, look at Attentive for an enterprise program or Postscript for something lighter, alongside an email app such as Klaviyo or Judge.me Email.
Check how each one charges for texts before you compare totals. Klaviyo's SMS plans include carrier fees. Postscript charges carrier fees on top of its per-message price, with a $49 monthly minimum on Starter. Omnisend adds SMS on its Pro plan, and Attentive prices by contract.
How to put loyalty data in every message
Mage doesn't send emails or texts itself. Loyalty messages go out through your email or SMS app, which is why the integration matters. Mage syncs each member's loyalty data to their profile in Klaviyo, Omnisend, Postscript or Attentive, and sends events those apps can use to start a flow. Here's what that lets you do:
- Show the balance in every email. Put the customer's points balance, or its cash value, in your campaign footer, not just in loyalty emails, so every send reminds them what they have to spend.
- Remind customers before points or credit expire. An expiry event can start an email or a short text a few days before the balance drops. Our guide on when to expire loyalty points covers how long to give customers.
- Confirm what they've earned straight away. A points-awarded or store credit event can trigger a text like the one in the Attentive section: "Congrats, you've earned $5 store credit towards your next order!"
- Celebrate tier upgrades. A tier event can send an email naming the new tier, the benefits it unlocks and how far the next one is.
- Segment on loyalty data. Build audiences such as members with more than 500 points, or members close to their next tier, and send them a campaign of their own.
For ready-made emails, see our loyalty email templates playbook, and for the SMS side, why SMS and loyalty work so well together. If you're on Klaviyo and still choosing a loyalty platform, our guide to loyalty apps that integrate with Klaviyo compares the options, including Mage's loyalty program.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free email marketing app for Shopify? Judge.me Email Marketing has the most generous free plan here: your first 15,000 emails each month are free, then $0.15 per 1,000. Klaviyo and Omnisend are free up to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Shopify also has its own email app, Shopify Messaging.
What is the best Klaviyo alternative for Shopify? It depends on why you're leaving. If it's cost, Omnisend does email and SMS for less, and Judge.me Email charges by emails sent rather than contacts. If you want something simpler, both feel less overwhelming than Klaviyo. If SMS matters more than email, look at Attentive or Postscript.
Should I use the same app for email and SMS? If email does most of your marketing, yes: one app means one customer profile and one set of flows. If SMS is a big channel for you, a dedicated SMS app such as Postscript or Attentive alongside your email app works too.
How much does SMS marketing cost on Shopify? Klaviyo's SMS starts at $15 a month for 1,250 credits, carrier fees included. Postscript charges $0.009 per SMS plus carrier fees on Starter, with a $49 monthly minimum. Omnisend adds SMS on its Pro plan from $0.007 a message. Attentive prices by contract. All prices are from the Shopify App Store listings on 16 October 2026.
Can I show loyalty points in emails and texts? Yes, if your loyalty app sends its data to your email or SMS app. Mage syncs each member's points balance, its cash value and VIP tier to Klaviyo, Omnisend, Postscript and Attentive, so you can put the balance in any message, and start flows when customers earn points or store credit, redeem a reward or move up a tier.
Which email app works inside the Shopify admin? Of the five apps here, only Judge.me Email Marketing runs inside the Shopify admin. Klaviyo, Omnisend, Postscript and Attentive each have their own platform you log in to.
Our verdict
- If you're getting started, or want a simpler tool inside Shopify, choose Judge.me Email Marketing. It's hard to fault for the price.
- If you're an enterprise brand and want the deepest automation, choose Klaviyo, and budget for a bill that grows with your list.
- If you're an enterprise brand and SMS drives your repeat sales, choose Attentive.
- If you want email and SMS in one app on a budget, choose Omnisend.
- If SMS is all you care about, choose Postscript.
Whichever you choose, connect it to your loyalty program so every message can show customers what they've earned and give them a reason to come back.
