Starbucks Rewards is Starbucks' free loyalty program in the US. Members earn Stars on purchases in participating Starbucks stores and trade them for free food, drinks and merchandise, from a $1 drink customization at 25 Stars to a $20 item at 400 Stars. There are three levels. Green members earn 1 Star per $1. Gold, reached by earning 500 Stars in a year, earns 1.2. Reserve, reached by earning 2,500, earns 1.7. Gold and Reserve members' Stars don't expire, and every member gets a birthday reward and a free drink customization once a month.

How to join Starbucks Rewards
Join for free on starbucks.com/rewards or in the Starbucks app. You'll be asked for your name, email address, phone number and a password, and you can add your birthday (month and day) to get the birthday reward. Members aged 13 to 18 need a parent or guardian's supervision, and each person can have one account.
Every new account comes with a digital Starbucks Card with a $0 balance. You can load money onto it, or add a physical Starbucks gift card, and pay with it in the app.
How you earn Stars
Members earn Stars on qualifying purchases at participating US Starbucks stores, either by paying in the app (with a Starbucks Card or a linked card or mobile wallet) or by scanning their member barcode and paying any other way. The rate depends on your level:
| Level | Stars per $1 |
|---|---|
| Green | 1 |
| Gold | 1.2 |
| Reserve | 1.7 |
There are several ways to earn faster:
- Bring a personal cup. Using a clean reusable cup instead of a paper cup earns double Stars on the whole transaction.
- Double Star Days. Gold members get 4 extra Double Star Days a year and Reserve members 6. Green members get personalized Double or Triple Star Days when Starbucks offers them, which may need activating in the app or by email.
- Digital reloads. Reloading $30 to your Starbucks Card in the app earns 10 Bonus Stars, and $50 earns 25, the most per reload.
- Offers and partners. Personalized offers and games pay Bonus Stars, and linking a Delta SkyMiles or Marriott Bonvoy account earns Bonus Stars and partner perks.
Stars usually appear within about 24 hours. They aren't earned on alcohol, Starbucks Card purchases or reloads, delivery orders, guest checkout or Starbucks Store Credit cards, and taxes, tips and fees may not count. Voiding a purchase takes back its Stars, which can leave a negative balance.
Every Starbucks reward and what it costs
| Stars | Reward | Worth up to | Value per Star at the cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | $1 off an extra espresso shot, syrup or sauce in a drink | $1 | 4 cents |
| 60 | $2 off a qualifying item | $2 | 3.3 cents |
| 100 | Brewed coffee or tea (hot or iced), a bakery item, a packaged snack or a Siren logo plastic cup | $6 | 6 cents |
| 200 | Any handcrafted drink, such as a latte or Frappuccino, or a hot breakfast item | $10 | 5 cents |
| 300 | A packaged salad or lunch sandwich, a protein box, or packaged coffee | $16 | 5.3 cents |
| 400 | Select merchandise or packaged Starbucks Reserve coffee | $20 | 5 cents |
Each reward has a maximum value before tax. If the item you choose costs more, you can pay the difference; if it costs less, the reward is worth less. So the values per Star above are the most each level can be worth.
What Starbucks Stars are worth
Unlike programs where saving up pays more per point, Starbucks' rewards are worth roughly the same per Star at every level: about 5 cents, with 100 Stars the best at up to 6 cents and 60 Stars the lowest at 3.3 cents. There's little reason to save Stars for a bigger reward, so members can redeem whenever they have enough.
At the caps, that means:
| Level | Best case (100 Stars, up to $6) | A handcrafted drink (200 Stars, up to $10) | Spending for a free handcrafted drink |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green | up to 6% back | up to 5% back | $200 |
| Gold | up to 7.2% back | up to 6% back | about $167 |
| Reserve | up to 10.2% back | up to 8.5% back | about $118 |
These are the most a member can get, because they assume an item priced at the cap. Using a personal cup, which doubles Stars on the transaction, raises the return further.
How to redeem Starbucks Stars
Redeem in the app or in store with your member account. Rewards can be used at participating Starbucks stores in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, and Canada and Puerto Rico use their own reward levels.
- One level per drink. You can't use 100 Stars for a brewed coffee and 25 Stars for an added syrup on the same drink.
- Not every store takes every level. Some participating stores only offer the 200-Star reward.
- Rewards can't be used on alcohol, multi-serve items such as a Coffee Traveler, Starbucks Cards, delivery orders or items sold online.
- Rewards generally can't be combined with other offers or discounts.
Gold and Reserve: how to reach and keep them
Everyone starts at Green. Your level is decided by the Stars you earn in a 12-month period, not by dollars spent. Starbucks tracks this Level Star Balance separately from the Stars you have available to redeem, so a level reset doesn't touch your redeemable Stars.
- Gold: earn 500 Stars within 12 months of joining. To keep Gold, earn 500 new Stars in the 12 months after reaching it.
- Reserve: earn 2,500 new Stars in the 12 months after reaching Gold. To keep Reserve, keep earning 2,500 a year. Fall short and you drop to Gold (500 to 2,499 Stars) or Green (under 500).
| Green | Gold | Reserve | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stars earned per year | Under 500 | 500+ | 2,500+ |
| Stars per $1 | 1 | 1.2 | 1.7 |
| Stars expire | 6 months, extended by activity | Never, while Gold | Never, while Reserve |
| Birthday reward | On your birthday | 7 days to redeem | 30 days to redeem |
| Extra Double Star Days | 4 a year | 6 a year | |
| Also | Free Mod Mondays, offers, double Stars with a personal cup | Same, plus possible invite-only merchandise | Plus a personalized Reserve Card and exclusive coffee experiences |
What it takes in spending
Because the thresholds are counted in Stars and higher levels earn Stars faster, each level gets cheaper to keep than it was to reach:
| Goal | Stars | Rate | Spending at that rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reach Gold from Green | 500 | 1 per $1 | $500 |
| Keep Gold | 500 | 1.2 per $1 | about $417 |
| Reach Reserve from Gold | 2,500 | 1.2 per $1 | about $2,083 |
| Keep Reserve | 2,500 | 1.7 per $1 | about $1,471 |
Bonus Stars bring those figures down. A Green member who brought a personal cup on every visit would earn 2 Stars per $1 and reach Gold on about $250.
Do Starbucks Stars expire?
For Green members, yes. Stars expire six months after the calendar month in which they were earned: Starbucks' example is that Stars earned on 15 December 2025 expire on 1 July 2026. Any of three actions in the month before the expiry date pushes it back by one month: a qualifying purchase, redeeming a Reward, or a digital reload of $30 or more. In practice, a Green member who visits every month keeps their Stars, and one who goes quiet loses their oldest Stars first.
Gold and Reserve members' Stars don't expire as long as they keep their level. Starbucks can also close an account that has earned no Stars for two years in a row, and any Stars in it are lost.
Starbucks birthday reward
Every member can get a free handcrafted drink, food item or ready-to-drink bottled drink for their birthday, in a standard menu size. To qualify, you need to:
- add your birthday to your account,
- join at least seven days before your birthday, and
- make at least one Star-earning purchase before your birthday each year.
The reward appears in your account on your birthday. Green members can use it on the day only, Gold members within seven days and Reserve members within 30 days. It can't be used on alcohol, merchandise, packaged coffee or multi-serve items.
Free Mod Mondays and other perks
- Free Mod Mondays: once a month, on a Monday Starbucks picks, every member gets one free drink customization worth up to $2. It can't be combined with a Reward or other offer.
- Early access and personalized offers: members get early or extended access to some menu items and promotions, and offers tailored to what they buy.
- Reserve recognition: Reserve members can request a free personalized Reserve Card and may be invited to special coffee experiences. Gold and Reserve members may get invite-only access to buy merchandise online.
The fine print
- Stars are only earned and redeemed at participating stores, and not every store can award Stars on every payment type.
- No Stars on alcohol, Starbucks Card purchases and reloads, delivery orders or guest checkout.
- Green Stars expire after six months unless you're active in the month before they're due to expire.
- Levels reset if you don't re-earn the threshold within 12 months; your redeemable Stars aren't affected.
- Rewards have maximum values, can't be used on delivery or online orders, and generally can't be combined with other offers.
- Starbucks can change or end the program at any time.
What stands out about Starbucks Rewards
Status gets cheaper to keep. Levels are counted in Stars, and higher levels earn Stars faster, so keeping Reserve takes about $1,471 of spending a year against about $2,083 to reach it from Gold. Top members have a built-in reason to stay.
Something every month. Free Mod Mondays, Double Star Days, the birthday reward and personalized offers mean members have a small reason to visit between bigger rewards.
Rewards are items, not dollars. The menu is a list of things to get, "a handcrafted drink" or "a bag of coffee", each with a cap. Members think in drinks rather than discounts, and can pay the difference if they want something more.
It rewards a behaviour, not just spending. Double Stars for bringing a reusable cup ties the program to something Starbucks wants customers to do.
What members should know going in:
- Rewards are worth up to their caps. Used on a drink that costs, say, $7, the $10 reward is worth $7, so choosing items close to the cap gets the most from your Stars.
- Green Stars expire. A member who skips a month can start losing Stars.
- The birthday reward needs a purchase first. You must make a Star-earning purchase before your birthday each year, and Green members have only the day itself.
- Delivery and online orders don't count. Stars and Rewards only work at participating stores.
Is Starbucks Rewards worth joining?
Yes, if you buy from Starbucks more than occasionally. It's free, a 200-Star handcrafted drink takes $200 of spending at Green, and the birthday reward and monthly free customization add value on top.
Regulars get much more. Reaching Gold at 500 Stars a year adds faster earning and stops your Stars expiring, and Reserve's 1.7 Stars per $1 makes a free handcrafted drink come round about every $118. If you're near a threshold, a personal cup and the app's Double Star Days are the quickest ways to get there.
What Shopify brands can learn from Starbucks Rewards
Starbucks Rewards is built for a purchase people make every week, and four ideas carry over to Shopify brands with frequent buyers, such as coffee, tea, supplements and beauty refills:
- Make rewards things, not percentages. "A free bag of coffee" is easier to want than "$16 off". Capping each reward and letting customers pay the difference keeps the cost predictable.
- Count status in points, so your best customers requalify for less. When higher tiers earn faster and tiers are counted in points, staying at the top costs less than getting there.
- Give something small every month. A monthly bonus, a birthday treat and occasional double points days give customers a reason to come back between bigger rewards.
- Reward the behaviour you want. Starbucks pays double for a reusable cup. A Shopify brand might pay more for a subscription renewal, a refill, or a review with a photo.
If you're building a Shopify loyalty program like this, Mage covers most of it. VIP tiers can be based on points earned, amount spent or number of orders over a rolling twelve months, with higher tiers earning more points per dollar. Rewards can be fixed amounts off or free products and apply at Shopify checkout with no code to copy. Points Drops add a one-time bonus to an audience's balance at a scheduled time, Bonus Points Campaigns run multipliers like 2x points for a day, and birthday rewards can scale by tier. With Recharge, Skio or Loop Subscriptions, Mage can award points when a subscription reaches a set number of renewals, and it runs inside Shopify POS, so in-store purchases earn and redeem against the same balance.
