A loyalty dashboard can make a flat repeat-purchase rate look like a revenue win if you treat every member order as proof that the program caused it. Loyalty revenue attribution tells you which orders touched a loyalty signal. It does not tell you how many of those orders would have happened anyway.

Short answer: Loyalty revenue attribution is revenue from orders linked to a defined loyalty action, such as a reward code, referral link, past redemption, or loyalty-email click. It is useful for measuring program influence, but it is not automatically incremental revenue because some customers would have purchased without that activity.

Loyalty revenue attribution is not the same as incremental revenue

The myth: every sale from a loyalty member proves the program worked

A customer can join, earn points, and place a full-price order without ever seeing a loyalty message or using a reward. Their account status alone is weak evidence that loyalty caused the purchase.

The same applies to a customer who redeemed a reward months ago and later buys again. That customer may be valuable and engaged, but their next order can be driven by product need, a replenishment cycle, a new launch, or an email unrelated to loyalty.

Attribution measures connection, incrementality measures lift

Attribution is a signpost. It shows that an order matched a defined loyalty signal.

Incrementality asks a harder question: would the order still have happened without the reward, referral, or message? Answering that requires a comparison group, a holdout, matched cohorts, or a careful before-and-after design.

One Marketing Science study found a 29.5% lift in customer value, with 23.6% attributed to reduced attrition in its specific loyalty-program research setting. That is useful evidence that rigorous analysis can separate mechanisms. It is not a benchmark for every Shopify store.

Why account ownership alone is weak evidence

Account creation measures reach. It does not show that a customer read an offer, valued a reward, or changed their buying behavior.

Read attributed revenue beside repeat purchase, reward use, margin, and retention cohorts. Then examine the cost per retained customer before deciding whether a program is producing profitable retention.

What loyalty revenue attribution actually counts

MetricQualifying signalBusiness question answeredWhat it does not prove
Incentivised revenueMage-issued discount code usedDid rewards drive checkout activity? The discount created a new order
Referral revenueCustomer acquired through referral linkAre advocates acquiring customers?Every later order was caused by the referral
Redeemer-repeat revenueCustomer has ever redeemedDo past redeemers remain valuable?A past reward caused every future order
Retention revenueLoyalty-email click before orderDid loyalty email prompt a return visit? The email was the only purchase driver

Loyalty-attributed revenue

Mage defines loyalty-attributed revenue as total revenue from orders attributed to loyalty activity in the selected period. It is not total store revenue, and it should never be presented as a second version of Shopify sales.

A Shopify loyalty program creates measurable signals through points, rewards, referrals, and loyalty communications.

Loyalty attribution rate

Loyalty attribution rate is loyalty-attributed revenue divided by total store revenue. It puts the attributed total in the context of the whole store.

There is no universal “good” rate. Compare the rate with your own prior periods, reward cost, gross margin, and test results.

Why total loyalty revenue is deduplicated

One order can qualify for more than one source. A past redeemer might use a Mage-issued discount code, for example.

Mage counts that order once in total loyalty revenue, rather than adding it twice across sources. The Mage Analytics definition treats the total as a deduplicated union, while the source breakdown explains why the order qualified.

The four loyalty revenue sources merchants need to separate

Incentivised revenue

Incentivised revenue is revenue from orders where a customer used a Mage-issued discount code during the selected period. This is the closest of the four measures to a direct reward-to-order connection.

Check the reward value, order value, margin, and whether customers are using rewards on incremental visits or simply discounting orders they already intended to place.

Use this metric with reward cost. Learn how to calculate your loyalty reward rate before judging reward-driven revenue as profitable.

Referral revenue

Referral revenue comes from customers acquired through a referral link. Mage includes every order those referred customers place during the selected period, not only their first purchase.

That makes referral revenue an acquisition and advocacy measure. It shows the value of customers who arrived through advocates, but it does not prove each later purchase was caused by the original referral.

Redeemer-repeat purchase revenue

Redeemer-repeat purchase revenue includes every selected-period order from customers who have ever redeemed a reward. It is a broad behavioral segment.

This measure identifies customers who have crossed an important threshold. They earned enough value to claim a reward and returned to buy.

Retention revenue

Retention revenue covers orders placed within seven days of a customer clicking a loyalty-email link. The window is a measurement rule, not a universal law of customer behavior.

This is primarily a communication-response measure. It helps you see whether loyalty emails are associated with return orders, especially around points reminders, reward availability, birthdays, and expiry notices.

High-AOV, low-frequency categories need more patience. For example, loyalty programs for jewelry brands may rely more on tier status, anniversary rewards, and long purchase cycles than on short-term order counts.

Active loyalty members, members, and redeemers are different groups

Active loyalty member definition

Mage defines active members as members who earned points or redeemed a reward during the selected period. Simply joining the program does not make someone active.

A customer can become active without placing an order. They may earn points for a signup, birthday, review, social action, or another configured activity.

Why signups are a weak engagement metric

Total members tells you program reach. It does not tell you whether customers understand the value exchange or take action after joining.

A growing member count with flat active members often points to weak onboarding, unclear earning rules, rewards that feel distant, or low visibility on product pages and checkout.

Report these layers together:

  • Total members, to measure reach.
  • Active members, to measure engagement.
  • Redeeming members added, to measure early program activation.

Redeeming members added

Redeeming members added are customers who joined and redeemed at least one reward within the same reporting period. Mage treats this as a signal that new signups are becoming engaged quickly.

Use the customer analytics definitions to check whether new members progress from joining, to earning, to claiming, to using a reward.

Redeemed versus used points: the reward funnel has two steps

StageWhat happenedWhat to measureCommon interpretation error
Claimed rewardCustomer spent balance and received a rewardReward claims by typeTreating a claim as completed revenue
Used rewardCustomer applied the reward at checkoutUsed reward count and order valueAssuming all issued rewards were used
Unused rewardReward was issued but not redeemed at checkoutUnused reward count and expiry behaviorIgnoring reward friction or weak intent

Claimed or redeemed rewards

A customer can claim a reward before they use it. When they redeem points or store credit for a discount reward, their balance is reduced and they receive a code or a reward to apply later.

Used rewards at checkout

Mage’s Rewards Claimed by Type reporting separates Used rewards from Unused rewards. Used means the reward was redeemed at checkout. Unused means it was issued but not redeemed.

The program analytics documentation makes the distinction visible by reward type, including fixed discounts, percentage discounts, free shipping, and free products.

What unused rewards reveal

High claims with low use can indicate weak purchase intent, a confusing checkout path, a minimum-spend barrier, an unsuitable reward, or expiry before the customer returns.

Pair reward-use data with conversion, AOV, and margin. Claims are evidence of interest. Used rewards show customers carried that interest through checkout.

How to test whether loyalty revenue is incremental

Compare members with non-members carefully

Member AOV, member CLV, and purchase frequency comparisons are useful behavioral diagnostics. They are not controlled experiments.

Customers who choose to join a program may already be more engaged than customers who do not.

Use cohorts and repeat-purchase windows

Group customers by first purchase date, program signup date, or the date they first received a loyalty message. Then compare revenue and repeat purchase across the same elapsed period.

Shopify defines a returning customer as someone whose order history includes at least one prior order, and its customer reports and cohort analysis can help compare repeat purchases over later periods.

Do not compare a newly enrolled cohort with a mature member cohort and call the difference program lift. Their time with the brand is different.

Build a holdout or matched comparison

For a campaign, keep a comparable group from receiving a specific loyalty email, reward offer, or reminder. Compare the exposed group with the holdout over the same period.

If a holdout is not practical, match customers on purchase history, recency, spend, and acquisition period. Estimate incremental revenue as the difference between the exposed group and the best available comparison.

Then subtract reward cost, discount cost, fulfillment impact, and campaign costs.

A practical workflow for reading loyalty program reports

Is behavior improving?Repeat purchase, AOV, purchase frequency, CLVImprovement against prior cohortsMember selection bias and margin

Start with revenue scope and date range

Start by confirming the reporting period and the metric window. Selected-date metrics and rolling metrics should not be compared as though they describe the same period.

Mage Member CLV and Member Purchase Frequency use a trailing twelve-month window, so they do not change when you switch the selected date range. Read them as longer-term customer behavior measures.

Check attribution overlap and refunds

Read total loyalty-attributed revenue first, then inspect the source breakdown. Remember that one order may appear under multiple qualifying sources while only counting once in the total.

Check refund treatment metric by metric. Mage documents refund-netted revenue for tier analytics, but you should verify the definition for each loyalty revenue report before comparing totals.

Read engagement and financial metrics together

A healthy report connects reach, engagement, behavior, and economics.

Look for high attribution with low margin, high claims with low reward use, or strong member revenue with no improvement in repeat behavior. These are investigation prompts, not automatic signs of success or failure.

If the numbers conflict, audit an underperforming loyalty program before changing earn rates or adding a larger discount.

Reconcile with Shopify Analytics

Reconcile by lining up date ranges, revenue definitions, refund treatment, customer identity rules, and rolling versus selected windows. Loyalty reporting answers attribution questions. Shopify reporting answers broader store and customer-history questions.

Shopify cohort analysis groups customers by first order date, so it will not necessarily match loyalty attribution logic. Use Mage integrations to keep loyalty data connected with the wider email, SMS, reviews, subscription, and support stack, then document which report answers which question.

FAQ

What is loyalty revenue attribution?

Loyalty revenue attribution is revenue from orders linked to a qualifying loyalty signal, such as a reward code, referral link, past reward redemption, or loyalty-email click. It measures the connection between loyalty activity and orders, but it does not prove the program created every attributed sale.

What is an active loyalty member?

An active loyalty member is a member who earned points or redeemed a reward during the selected reporting period in Mage Analytics. This differs from total members, which includes everyone who joined, and from redeeming members added, which tracks new members who joined and redeemed within the same period.

What is the difference between redeemed and used points?

Redeemed points are points a customer spent to claim a reward, while a used reward is one applied at checkout. A customer can claim a discount reward and never use it, so reporting should separate issued rewards from rewards that actually influenced an order.

Does loyalty-attributed revenue mean the program caused the sale?

Loyalty-attributed revenue does not mean the program caused the sale. It means an order matched a defined loyalty signal. Estimating causality requires a stronger comparison, such as a holdout group, matched customers, or cohorts observed over the same purchase window.

How does referral revenue differ from retention revenue?

Referral revenue comes from customers acquired through referral links, including their later orders during the reporting period. Retention revenue comes from orders placed within the defined period after a customer clicks a loyalty-email link. One measures advocacy-led acquisition, while the other measures communication response.

How can I reconcile loyalty reports with Shopify Analytics?

You can reconcile loyalty reports with Shopify Analytics by matching date ranges, refund treatment, customer identity rules, and metric definitions before comparing totals. Shopify returning-customer and cohort reports use order history, while loyalty reports use qualifying loyalty signals, so the figures can differ for valid reasons.

Use loyalty-attributed revenue to identify where loyalty activity connects to orders. Use cohorts, costs, margin, and a real comparison group before deciding whether that activity produced incremental profit.
