H&M Membership is H&M's free loyalty program in the US. Members earn 1 point for every $1 spent online or in store, and every 250 points earns a $5 Reward, which is 2% of spend. There are two levels, Core and Plus: everyone starts at Core with free shipping on orders over $50 and member prices, and members move up to Plus at 500 points, which adds early access to drops and sales, exclusive experiences, special offers and premium giveaways. The reward is a voucher that H&M issues 30 days after you reach 250 points.

Based on H&M's US membership page as of 23 September 2026 and its Membership Terms and Conditions as of 20 August 2026 (last updated 29 September 2025). The clothes drop-off details come from H&M's garment collecting page as of 6 July 2026. This is the US program, which is country specific.

This guide is written by Graeme, co-founder of Mage, a loyalty and customer accounts platform for Shopify.

How to join H&M Membership

Joining is free and needs no purchase. You can register on hm.com or in the H&M app, but H&M says you don't need the app to be a member. You need to be an adult in your state or territory of residence, or at least 16 with a parent or guardian's consent, and have a valid email address. H&M allows one membership per person and per email address.

The sign-up form asks for an optional date of birth and says H&M "wants to give you a special treat on your birthday". The membership page doesn't say what the treat is.

Your member ID is on your account page. In store, you scan it from the H&M app, or sign in before you pay, so the purchase counts toward your points. If you forget, H&M says you can ask customer service or bring your receipt to a store and a sales advisor can register it. The membership is specific to the US, so it can't be used abroad, and members can't earn points or use rewards in H&M stores in Puerto Rico.

How you earn H&M points

Earn points, receive rewards: H&M members receive a $5 Reward for every 250 points earned. Rewarding ways to earn are 1 point for every $1 spent and a 15% off reward for dropping off old clothes in store

The earning section of the H&M membership page as of 23 September 2026.

H&M's membership page lists two ways to earn:

ActionReward
Spend online, in the app or in store1 point per $1 spent
Drop off old clothes in storeA 15% off coupon for every bag

Points show in your account within up to 24 hours. H&M says points are earned on all purchases except gift cards and charity items. If you return an item, the points earned on it are deducted.

The drop-off reward is a coupon rather than points. H&M asks for clean, previously loved clothing or textiles from any brand, placed in a collection box in store, and the membership page says you'll get a 15% off coupon for every bag. The validity, minimum spend and limits of the coupon aren't published on the page.

What H&M points are worth

H&M's own FAQ answers "How much is a point worth?" with "$1 spent = 1 point". The membership page and terms give the other half of the conversion: a $5 Reward for every 250 points. Put together, a point is worth 2 cents, and the program pays 2% back in rewards on what a member spends.

Spend in a membership yearPoints$5 Rewards
$2502501 ($5)
$5005002 ($10), and Plus
$1,0001,0004 ($20)

These are our calculations from H&M's published rates, before returns and excluding gift cards. H&M doesn't publish a different earn rate for Plus members.

How the $5 Reward works

When you reach 250 points, H&M issues a $5 bonus voucher to My Account, 30 days after the date you hit the limit. Members can receive up to 5 bonus vouchers per calendar month and a maximum of 60 in any 12 months.

To use a bonus voucher:

  • Online: choose Add to Bag at checkout.
  • In store: choose Use in Store, which starts a 15 minute countdown. The voucher has to be redeemed at the checkout within 15 minutes, and H&M won't accept printouts or screenshots of it.

The rules attached to the voucher:

  • Each voucher is redeemable once.
  • The value is spread evenly across the items in the order, not taken off the total.
  • If you return an item, you're refunded what you paid for it, and the voucher isn't reissued, for returns or exchanges.
  • The order total after the voucher must be more than $1.
  • Vouchers can't be exchanged for cash or gift cards, used to buy gift cards or applied to past purchases.

H&M doesn't publish an expiry date for the voucher, other than the 15 minute window in store.

H&M Membership levels: Core and Plus

The benefits of belonging: H&M members get Core member benefits and, from 500 points, Plus member benefits, with the lists of each

The Core and Plus member benefits on the H&M membership page as of 23 September 2026.

H&M's membership has two levels. Core is the intro level, and Plus starts at 500 points within the qualification period.

LevelHow you get itBenefits
CoreEveryone, on joiningFree shipping over $50, exclusive member prices, partner promotions, VIP event invites, early access to shopping events, Klarna pay now or later
Plus500 pointsAll Core benefits, plus early access to drops and sales, exclusive experiences, special Plus member offers and discounts, premium giveaways

H&M describes a few of these. Exclusive member prices are "temporary markdowns and deals on select days". Partner promotions are discounts and deals from H&M's brand partners. VIP event invites are for store events, brand experiences and collection launches. Klarna lets members pay now or up to 30 days later. The page doesn't give details of the Plus offers, giveaways or experiences.

How levels and points are counted

The date you become a member is the Start Date of each membership year, and the membership year is the 12 months that follow. Your level is based on the points you earned in the current or the previous membership year, whichever is higher. If you reach Plus during a membership year, you stay at Plus for the rest of that year and the whole of the following one. H&M's own example: join on 1 June 2020 and reach Plus on 1 August 2020, and you keep Plus until 31 May 2022.

If you don't earn enough points to qualify for Plus, you return to Core for the following membership year.

Do H&M points expire?

At the end of each membership year, the points that count toward your level are reset to 0. H&M's FAQ puts it as points being valid for 12 months following your membership start date. The terms add that the points counting toward a bonus voucher are valid until the next Start Date, so progress toward the next $5 Reward doesn't carry across that date. Cancelling your membership forfeits any points that remain.

The fine print

  • Points are earned only by shopping as a logged-in member, online, in the app or in H&M and H&M HOME stores in the US. There are no points on gift cards or charity items.
  • Points earned on a returned item are deducted.
  • The bonus voucher is issued 30 days after you reach 250 points, with a limit of 5 vouchers a month and 60 a year.
  • In store, a voucher must be used within 15 minutes of activating it.
  • Vouchers aren't reissued after returns or exchanges.
  • Points are personal and can't be transferred to another member.
  • H&M can restrict or end accounts for things like very frequent returns, resale or multiple accounts, and points shown on a cancelled account expire.
  • H&M can change or end the program, with changes taking effect 14 days after notice.

What stands out about H&M Membership

One rate and one reward. The whole points scheme is a dollar per point and a $5 reward at 250 points. There's no catalogue to browse and no points-for-products ladder, so a member can work out their position at a glance.

Levels add access rather than a published earn rate. H&M lists one earn rate, and describes the Plus benefits as early access, experiences, offers and giveaways. The page doesn't list a faster earn rate for Plus members.

The voucher is built to survive returns. The reward arrives 30 days after the threshold, the value is spread across the items in the order, and the voucher isn't reissued after a return or exchange. All three take the return risk out of the reward.

A reward for clothes, not just spend. Any brand's clothes dropped off in store earn a 15% off coupon, which ties the program to H&M's garment collecting service and gives members a reason to visit a store.

The year starts when you join. The membership year runs from each member's own join date rather than the calendar year, so qualification and the reset happen on a different date for every member.

What members should know going in:

  • The reward isn't immediate. The $5 voucher arrives 30 days after you reach 250 points and is capped at 5 a month.
  • Progress resets. Points counting toward a voucher are valid until your next Start Date, so points short of 250 at that date don't carry over.
  • In-store use is time limited. A voucher has to be redeemed within 15 minutes of activating it, and screenshots aren't accepted.
  • Returns reduce your points and the voucher isn't reissued.
  • Plus details are thin. The page names the Plus benefits but not how often offers or giveaways happen, or what they are.

Is H&M Membership worth joining?

Yes, if you shop at H&M at all. It's free, there's no purchase required, and Core members get free shipping on orders over $50 and member prices as part of the free level.

If you spend $250 or more a year, you'll collect a $5 voucher. At $500 you reach Plus, which unlocks the early access, experiences and giveaways. For occasional shoppers, the free shipping on orders over $50 and the 15% off coupon for dropping off old clothes are likely to be worth more than the points, because $250 of spending earns a single $5 voucher. If you return a lot of what you buy, remember that points on returned items are deducted and that vouchers are spread across the items in an order.

What Shopify brands can learn from H&M Membership

H&M's program is built around very few numbers, and four ideas carry over to Shopify brands:

  1. Pick one reward number customers can remember. A $5 reward at 250 points, at one point per dollar, is easy to hold in your head. A single fixed-amount reward has a known cost, so it's easy to model.
  2. Let levels open access, not just earn faster. H&M's Plus level is described through early access, experiences and offers. A level that gives early access and offers costs little until someone uses it. In Mage, VIP tiers can hold tier-specific rewards, and the point multiplier on a tier can stay at 1x.
  3. Protect rewards from returns. A delay before points or vouchers are issued, and a rule that a refunded order doesn't give the voucher back, stops a customer redeeming, returning and keeping both. In Mage, a fixed-amount reward has a setting for whether its discount code is reactivated on a full refund.
  4. Reward behaviour that fits the brand. H&M rewards bringing in old clothes, which fits a fashion retailer. A non-purchase action that matches what your brand stands for gives members a reason to engage between orders.

If you're building a Shopify loyalty program like this, Mage covers much of the structure. You can set a points-per-dollar earning rule, fixed-amount discount rewards, a free shipping reward, VIP tiers based on points earned over a rolling year, where redeeming points doesn't reduce tier progress, and a Shopify POS tile so in-store orders attached to a customer earn points. Members are tagged in Shopify automatically, so you can use the tags for segments and early access. We've written a step-by-step guide to setting up a loyalty program like H&M on Shopify.
