Kohl's Rewards program questions land in a Shopify merchant's support queue whenever customers see a balance, a coupon, and a sale price but cannot tell which one applies first. The Kohl's Rewards program is useful to study because it separates ongoing loyalty earning from short-term promotional rewards.
Short answer: Kohl's Rewards is the always-on layer. Members earn 5% on qualifying purchases, while Kohl's Card users may qualify for a higher rate under current rules. That balance later becomes Kohl's Cash in $5 increments. Separate Kohl's Cash Earn Periods create promotional rewards with their own dates, exclusions, and return treatment.
What is the Kohl's Rewards program?
The two mechanics shoppers often confuse
Kohl's Rewards is Kohl's free loyalty program. You can join without a Kohl's Card, then earn a percentage back on qualifying purchases and build a balance over time.
The confusion begins because the eventual reward is called Kohl's Cash. That makes it easy to assume every Kohl's Cash certificate comes from the same system. It does not.
Kohl's Rewards earnings are the ongoing loyalty mechanic. Promotional Kohl's Cash is earned only during advertised Earn Periods. Both can appear in the same customer's account, but they have different triggers and restrictions.
What members earn and when it appears
Members earn 5% Kohl's Rewards on qualifying purchases. Kohl's calculates that amount after coupons, but before tax, shipping, and fees.
The earnings generally appear in the member's balance within 48 hours. Kohl's then converts eligible balances into $5 Kohl's Cash increments on the first day of the following month.
A shopper may buy today, see Rewards earnings a day or two later, then wait until the next month before receiving a usable Kohl's Cash certificate.
How Kohl's Rewards and Kohl's Cash work together
| Mechanic | How it is earned | When it is issued | Where it can be redeemed | Important exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kohl's Rewards | Qualifying purchases | Added to Rewards balance, then converted monthly | Eligible Kohl's purchases after conversion | Qualifying-purchase rules apply |
| Rewards-issued Kohl's Cash | Converted Rewards balance | First day of the following month | Eligible Kohl's purchases | Cannot be redeemed on Sephora at Kohl's merchandise |
| Promotional Kohl's Cash | Purchases during an advertised Earn Period | Based on the promotion's stated timing | Eligible Kohl's purchases during its redemption window | Cannot be earned or redeemed on Sephora at Kohl's merchandise |
Always-on Rewards earnings
The ongoing layer is simple: spend on qualifying merchandise, earn a percentage back, and let the balance accumulate. Kohl's converts the balance into $5 increments rather than asking customers to choose a reward from a catalogue.
That structure creates a delayed reason to return. For merchants, it is a useful distinction between a running balance and a time-limited redemption asset. For a broader merchant comparison of reward currencies, see loyalty points versus store credit.
Promotional Kohl's Cash Earn Periods
Promotional Kohl's Cash is separate. Kohl's offers it during specific advertised earning periods, and the amount is calculated after applicable coupons but before tax.
The promotion's dates are based on Central Time, so a late-night online order can fall outside the advertised window depending on where the customer is shopping from. Check the promotion terms rather than assuming every purchase earns promotional Kohl's Cash.
A worked example
This is illustrative, not a description of every Kohl's promotion.
A customer places a qualifying order while a Kohl's Cash Earn Period is active. The order can create regular Kohl's Rewards earnings and also qualify for promotional Kohl's Cash if it meets that promotion's conditions.
The first value enters the Rewards balance and converts later. The second is tied to the Earn Period and its stated redemption window. Treat those as two separate outcomes from one transaction.
How to earn, find, and redeem Kohl's Cash
Step 1: Join and link your accounts
Join Kohl's Rewards online or at a register. Use the same email address connected to your Kohls.com account so purchase activity and issued rewards are easier to find in one place.
A Kohl's Card is not required to join. Kohl's says card usage can produce a higher Rewards earning rate under its current program rules, but the card is a payment product, not a membership requirement.
Step 2: Check your balance
Check your Kohl's Rewards balance through your Kohls.com account or the Kohl's app. Once issued, Kohl's Cash can be stored in Kohl's Wallet for customers with linked accounts.
If an online account is not linked, a shopper may need the Kohl's Cash certificate's 15-digit number and four-digit PIN to apply it. Save the certificate details until the order is complete and any return period has passed.
Step 3: Wait for issuance
Kohl's says Rewards earnings are generally added within 48 hours. Eligible balances convert into $5 Kohl's Cash increments on the first day of the following month.
Issued Kohl's Cash from the Rewards program is generally valid for 30 days. Amounts that do not reach a $5 conversion increment may expire after one year under current terms, so a small stranded balance is possible.
Step 4: Apply Kohl's Cash at checkout
Apply available Kohl's Cash during checkout on eligible merchandise. Kohl's says Kohl's Cash can be used with other eligible coupons, but individual promotions can add restrictions.
Check the order summary before placing the order. Confirm that the certificate applied, that the merchandise is eligible, and that the remaining total reflects the coupon combination you expected. Confirm the reward adjustment before closing a return.
The Sephora at Kohl's rules that change the answer
What you can earn on Sephora purchases
Kohl's says customers can earn Kohl's Rewards on Sephora purchases. That purchase can add value to the regular Rewards balance, subject to the program's qualifying-purchase rules.
A Sephora at Kohl's order can contribute to the loyalty balance even though it is excluded from Kohl's Cash promotions.
What you cannot redeem on Sephora merchandise
Kohl's Cash cannot be earned or redeemed on Sephora at Kohl's merchandise. That includes promotional Kohl's Cash earned during an advertised Earn Period.
Eligibility is determined by the merchandise in the basket.
Why the two statements are not contradictory
The programs use different rules. Sephora purchases can contribute to Kohl's Rewards, while Kohl's Cash is restricted from Sephora merchandise.
Practically, a Sephora purchase may help a customer reach a future $5 Rewards conversion threshold. The resulting Kohl's Cash is then for eligible Kohl's purchases, not for a later Sephora transaction.
How stacking works with coupons, sales, and the Kohl's Card
What applies first
Kohl's states that Kohl's Cash and other dollar-off coupons are applied before percentage-off total-purchase coupons. Its qualifying-purchase calculation also happens after applicable coupons, before tax, shipping, and fees.
That order changes both the amount paid and the amount that can generate Rewards. Kohl's Cash can work with eligible coupons, but product exclusions, promotion-specific terms, and the coupon type can change the final result.
Why a percentage-off coupon is not the same as 5% back
A percentage-off coupon lowers the current order total. Kohl's Rewards gives value after a qualifying purchase, then delays that value until conversion and redemption.
A merchant offering an immediate discount gives up margin on the first order. A delayed reward gives the customer a reason to return. See discounts versus points.
Kohl's Card usage may increase the Rewards earn rate under current rules, but it should not be treated as required for participation.
Returns, cancellations, and reduced rewards
Returns, price adjustments, and canceled purchases can reduce or rescind Kohl's Cash. Kohl's may also reduce a merchandise refund or price adjustment when Kohl's Cash affected the original transaction.
Write the return rule before launch. Decide what happens when the order that funded a reward is partly or fully reversed.
What Shopify merchants should copy from Kohl's
| Rule to decide | Question to answer | Customer-facing message |
|---|---|---|
| Base earning | What earns value on every qualifying order? | Earn rewards on eligible purchases |
| Campaign bonus | When should customers earn more than usual? | Earn extra rewards during this event |
| Conversion threshold | When does a balance become redeemable? | Your balance converts at the stated threshold |
| Expiry | How long can a reward remain unused? | Redeem by the date shown in your account |
| Returns | What happens when the original order is refunded? | Rewards may adjust when an order is returned |
Separate currencies by job
Use one always-on earning mechanic for predictable engagement and a separate campaign mechanic for seasonal urgency. Give each one a clear name.
Customers should know whether they are building a balance, receiving a limited-time bonus, or holding a reward that is ready to spend.
Make the earn event obvious
Show customers what qualifies, what does not, and whether discounts affect the calculation. Put the balance, next threshold, expiry date, and redemption limits in the account area and at checkout.
Shopify supports discount codes, automatic discounts, sale pricing, and discount combinations. Test the exact stack you intend to offer rather than assuming every discount works together.
Design redemption before launch
Write return, cancellation, and partial-refund treatment before the program goes live. Decide whether rewards apply to sale items, shipping, specific products, or only orders above a minimum spend.
Shopify merchants can use customer segments and Shopify Flow for targeted rewards and post-purchase loyalty triggers.
Measure repeat behavior, not signups alone
Shopify defines repeat purchase rate as repeat customers divided by total customers, multiplied by 100. Track that alongside redemption rate, reward cost, and time between orders.
A Shopify article reports that 72% of sampled US loyalty-program members say loyalty programs make them more likely to spend with a preferred brand, while 56% say they spend more. These are reported survey responses, not measured incremental revenue or a universal benchmark.
How to build a Kohl's-style loyalty structure on Shopify with Mage
Configure the base earning rule
In Mage, go to Loyalty Program > Earning Points > Add Earning Rule to create a purchase earning rule. The Mage Help Centre documents loyalty-program setup and configuration.
Start with one rule customers can understand in seconds. Mage can set different earning rates by product or collection, and merchants can exclude products on sale when that better protects margin.
Add campaign-based bonuses
Bonus Points Campaigns support multiplier or tiered promotions during a defined window. A multiplier can increase purchase earnings for a weekend, while a tiered campaign can award a flat bonus once customers reach spend thresholds.
Points Drops add a scheduled one-time bonus to a Shopify customer segment or VIP tier without requiring a purchase.
That creates the same broad pattern as Kohl's: predictable ongoing earning plus selective promotional intensity. A Shopify loyalty program can use that structure without making customers decode multiple unexplained balances.
Choose points or store credit
Mage supports points and an internal store-credit loyalty mode. The store-credit mode is a Mage ledger displayed as currency, not the customer's Shopify-native store-credit balance.
To create a free product, free shipping, percentage, fixed-discount, or store-credit reward, go to Loyalty Program > Redeeming Points > Add Reward. See the Mage Help Centre for reward setup guidance.
Review Mage pricing and plans to understand the available plan options.
Make redemption visible at checkout
Mage Checkout Extensions can show points to earn and available rewards in Shopify Checkout. Flexible Redemption lets eligible customers apply a variable amount of reward value rather than choosing only fixed blocks.
Mage Canvas can shape the loyalty page, Rewards Widget, account sidebar, and redemption instructions so the program uses the store's own colours, typography, and language.
For a more detailed implementation framework, see this Kohl's-style loyalty program structure.
Test refunds and edge cases
Test orders with sale products, stacked discounts, partial refunds, canceled orders, and expired rewards before launch.
Mage reverses points proportionally after partial refunds and reduces spend-based tier totals. Test that customer-facing result before customers encounter it on a real return.
“I looked into so many different integrations for loyalty and referrals for our Shopify Store, but no one impressed me more than Mage on human connection, customer service, and value.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the Kohl's Rewards program?
Kohl's Rewards is Kohl's free loyalty program that gives members 5% back on qualifying purchases. Earnings are generally added within 48 hours, then eligible balances convert into $5 Kohl's Cash increments on the first day of the following month. A Kohl's Card is not required to join.
What is the difference between Kohl's Rewards and Kohl's Cash?
Kohl's Rewards is the earning layer, while Kohl's Cash is the certificate customers use on eligible purchases. Rewards-issued Kohl's Cash comes from a monthly balance conversion, while promotional Kohl's Cash is earned only during advertised Earn Periods and follows the terms of that specific promotion.
Can you use Kohl's Cash with coupons?
Kohl's Cash can generally be used with other eligible coupons. Kohl's says dollar-off coupons, including Kohl's Cash, apply before percentage-off total-purchase coupons, but individual promotions can have extra restrictions, product exclusions, or combination limits that change the result at checkout.
Can you earn Kohl's Rewards on Sephora purchases?
Kohl's Rewards can be earned on Sephora at Kohl's purchases under Kohl's published FAQ. Kohl's Cash follows different rules: it cannot be earned on Sephora merchandise during Kohl's Cash Earn Periods, and it cannot be redeemed on Sephora at Kohl's merchandise.
When does Kohl's Rewards turn into Kohl's Cash?
Kohl's Rewards turns into Kohl's Cash when eligible balances are converted into $5 increments on the first day of the following month. Kohl's says Rewards-issued Kohl's Cash is generally valid for 30 days, so customers should check their Wallet or account before the certificate expires.
What happens to Kohl's Cash after a return?
Kohl's Cash can be reduced or rescinded after a return, price adjustment, or canceled purchase connected to the reward. Kohl's may also adjust the merchandise refund when Kohl's Cash affected the original order, so keep the order details and certificate information until the transaction is settled.
