How to join Kohl's Rewards
Joining is free: sign up at Kohls.com/KohlsRewards, in the Kohl's App, in a store, or when you apply for a Kohl's Card. The program is open to US residents aged 16 and up, with parental permission for members under the age of majority.
To earn on an order, Kohl's needs to know it's you: log in to your linked account before buying online or in the app, give your account details in store, or pay with a linked Kohl's Card.
How you earn Kohl's Rewards
Every qualifying purchase earns 5%, which works out at $5 for every $100 you spend. Pay with a Kohl's Card and the rate rises to 7.5%. Qualifying purchases are worked out after all coupons and discounts, before shipping, fees and tax, and gift card purchases don't count. Rewards usually land in your balance within 48 hours of a purchase.
On the 1st of the following month, Kohl's turns your balance into Kohl's Cash in $5 amounts. Anything below the next $5 stays in your balance for the following month. A balance that never reaches a conversion expires after one year.
Kohl's own example on its rewards page: spend $500 and a member earns $25 in Kohl's Cash, while a member paying with a Kohl's Card earns $35. At 7.5%, $500 earns $37.50, so $35 is issued and the remaining $2.50 carries forward.
Kohl's Rewards vs Kohl's Cash
The two are easy to confuse because both end up as Kohl's Cash.
- Rewards Kohl's Cash comes from your Kohl's Rewards balance. It's earned on every purchase, issued on the 1st of each month and valid for 30 days.
- Event Kohl's Cash comes from Kohl's promotional earn periods. During an event, every customer, member or not, gets $10 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 spent in a single transaction. It's issued at the register in store, or by email within 24 hours for online and app orders, and can only be used in the redemption window printed on it.
Members earn both on the same purchase during an event. The rewards page puts it simply: Kohl's Cash earned with rewards is "on top of regular Kohl's Cash".
How to use Kohl's Cash, and how it stacks with coupons
Kohl's Cash works like a dollar-off coupon on almost anything in store, online or in the app, and it can be combined with Kohl's coupons, sales and other offers. It can't be used on Sephora at Kohl's purchases, gift cards, or Kohl's Cares and other charitable items.
The order matters. Kohl's applies Kohl's Cash and other dollar-off discounts before percent-off coupons. On a $100 order with $10 in Kohl's Cash and a 20% coupon, Kohl's takes off the $10 first and then 20% of the remaining $90, so you pay $72 rather than $70.
Rewards Kohl's Cash has to be used within 30 days, and event Kohl's Cash only works inside its printed dates. Kohl's Cash can't be used once it has expired.
Returns and Kohl's Cash
Returning an item that earned Kohl's Cash reduces the value of that Kohl's Cash. If you've already spent it, your refund is your original payment minus the Kohl's Cash you used. If you return something you paid for with Kohl's Cash, that part comes back as Return Kohl's Cash, valid for 30 days from the return.
What Kohl's Rewards is really worth: three examples
The headline rate is 5%, but how much a shopper actually gets depends on when they shop, how much they spend and whether they come back in time. These examples use only the rules above.
1. Shopping during a Kohl's Cash event. A member who spends $100 in one transaction during an earn event gets $20 in event Kohl's Cash ($10 for each full $50) plus $5 in rewards: $25, or 25% back. Paying with a Kohl's Card adds another $2.50, though only $5 is issued on the 1st and the $2.50 carries forward. The catch is timing. The $20 arrives straight away with its own redemption dates, and the $5 arrives on the 1st of the next month with 30 days to use it, so getting the full 25% takes two more trips. And because event Kohl's Cash comes in $50 steps, a $99 order earns $10, not $20.
2. A regular, modest shopper. Someone who spends $60 a month earns $3 a month in rewards. Nothing is issued after the first month, because the balance hasn't reached $5. After the second month, $5 is issued and $1 carries over. Over a year, that shopper earns $36 and receives $35 in Kohl's Cash across seven months, with $1 left in the balance.
3. An occasional shopper. Someone who spends $150 in January earns $7.50. On 1 February, $5 is issued as Kohl's Cash and $2.50 stays in the balance. If their next visit is in April, that $5 expired at the start of March. For a shopper who visits every few months, the real return is close to zero unless they plan a trip around each payout.
The pattern is clear: Kohl's Rewards is worth the full 5%, and more during events, to people who shop at least monthly. The $5 threshold and the 30-day window quietly take value back from everyone else.
Does Kohl's Rewards have tiers?
No. Every member earns 5% and gets the same perks. The extra layer comes from the Kohl's Card:

MVC, Kohl's Most Valued Customer status, is the nearest thing to a tier. Cardholders who spend $600 with their Kohl's Card unlock it for a year, which adds monthly free shipping events.
Sephora at Kohl's and Kohl's Rewards
Kohl's Cash can't be spent on Sephora at Kohl's purchases, whether it came from rewards or an earn event. On the earning side, the Kohl's Rewards terms list gift card purchases as the only purchases that don't qualify for rewards.

What stands out about Kohl's Rewards
A clear rate, paid as cash. 5% back with no points to convert makes the program easy to understand, and paying it out as Kohl's Cash rather than points ties it to the currency Kohl's shoppers already know.
A monthly rhythm with a deadline. Issuing Kohl's Cash on the 1st and giving it 30 days creates a reason to come back every month. The deadline does the work: Kohl's Cash that isn't used in time is simply lost.
Two layers of earning. Everyday rewards for members, plus earn events for everyone, means members get both during the biggest sales periods, while non-members still get a reason to join.
What members should know going in:
- Kohl's Cash expires fast. Thirty days is short, so it pays to plan your next visit around it.
- Small balances wait. Nothing is issued until you reach $5, and amounts that never get there expire after a year.
- Sephora at Kohl's is excluded from spending. Kohl's Cash can't be used there.
Is Kohl's Rewards worth joining?
If you shop at Kohl's, yes. It's free, 5% back on every purchase adds up, and members still get event Kohl's Cash on top during promotions. The value depends on returning within 30 days to spend each month's Kohl's Cash, so it suits regular shoppers more than occasional ones. The extra 2.5% from a Kohl's Card is worth weighing against the terms of a store credit card.
What Shopify brands can learn from Kohl's Rewards
Kohl's is a department store, but the mechanics behind its program translate directly to a Shopify store. Five ideas are worth taking:
- Pay rewards as store credit. A dollar balance is easier to understand than points, and it can only be spent with you. For a Shopify brand, store credit that applies at checkout without a code keeps the reward one click from the next order.
- Pay out on a schedule. Issuing rewards on the 1st of every month gives Kohl's a reason to email every member at the same time. A Shopify brand can do the same with a monthly credit drop and a Klaviyo or SMS message the day it lands.
- Run events on top of the everyday rate. Kohl's Cash events are a spend-threshold bonus ("$10 for every $50"). On Shopify, the same idea works as a bonus for crossing a spend threshold during Black Friday or a product launch, without raising your everyday rate.
- Set expiry for your purchase cycle, not Kohl's. A 30-day window suits a store people visit monthly. Many Shopify brands sell on a longer cycle, so a short window would mostly take value back from loyal customers. Match the window to how often your customers reorder, and remind them before anything expires.
- Reward high spenders with status. MVC unlocks monthly free shipping events after $600 on the Kohl's Card. A Shopify brand can set a VIP tier on annual spend and give it free or upgraded shipping, a perk customers notice on every order.
