PetSmart Treats Rewards is PetSmart's free points program for shoppers in the US and Puerto Rico. Members earn 10 points for every $1 spent on products and services such as grooming and training, redeem every 1,000 points for $2 off, and move through three tiers, Member, Bestie and Very Important Pet Parent (VIPP), at $500 and $1,000 of spending a year, which add 2 and 4 points per $1. Services earn and have their own rewards, and a member can reach VIPP by adopting a pet in a store. Points expire 12 months after they are earned.
Last checked on 27 October 2026 against PetSmart's Treats Rewards page, Treats Rewards FAQs and Treats Rewards Terms & Conditions (last updated July 2025), and PetSmart's announcement of the relaunched program (9 April 2024), for the US in US dollars.

How to join Treats Rewards
You join in a store at the register, at petsmart.com or in the PetSmart app, with a first and last name, phone number and email address. Online and in the app, you confirm your email through a verification link. If you sign up in a store, you create a password online or in the app with the same details before you can redeem points there or see your balance. Membership is limited to people aged 18 and over who live in the US, including Puerto Rico, and each person can hold one account. PetSmart Canada runs its own program.
A new account starts in the Member tier. Completing your profile, with contact details, text and email preferences, address and pet information, earns a one-time bonus of 1,000 points, worth $2. Sign-up offers change often, so check the current one on PetSmart's page.
How you earn points
| Action | Points | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Spend on products and services | 10 per $1 | Same at every tier; cents count, so $35.55 earns 355.5 points |
| Tier bonus | +2 per $1 at Bestie, +4 at VIPP | Applies to purchases after status is awarded |
| Donations to PetSmart Charities | 2X points | At checkout in stores, online or in the app |
| Profile completion | 1,000, once | Contact details, preferences, address and pet information |
| Activated offers | Varies | Most offers need a click on "activate" first |
| Own 2X purchase | Doubles base points on one purchase | One a year for Bestie, two for VIPP |
| Salon Reward Certificate | 5,000 points | Up to two a year, see below |
| Autoship Points Payout | 2,500 per $100 of recurring spend | Four times a year, see below |
Members must identify themselves at checkout: by scanning the Treats ID in the app or giving a phone number or email in a store, or by being logged in online. Purchases made before joining, without identifying yourself or while logged out online don't earn.
Points are earned on the price after discounts, so a $100 item on sale for $75 earns on $75. Gift cards, shipping charges, bag fees, taxes, tips and veterinary services don't earn. Orders on DoorDash, Instacart and Shipt earn only if the Treats account is linked on that marketplace before the order is placed.
Base points are added at the till, and bonus points, including tier bonuses, usually arrive at the same time but can take up to 72 hours. Online orders are credited 24 to 72 hours after the order has shipped, or on pickup for buy online, pick up in store orders.
Tier bonuses apply only to the underlying purchase, never to multiplier offers. PetSmart's own example is a VIPP using a 5X offer on $15: the multiplier earns 750 points (the offer is calculated on the base rate of 10 points, not 14) and the tier bonus adds 60, for 810 in total.
What Treats Rewards points are worth
PetSmart states the exchange rate: 1,000 points are $2 in savings. A point is worth $0.002, so the base earn of 10 points per $1 returns 2% (our arithmetic), and the tier bonuses lift that slightly.
| Tier | Points per $1 | Return per $1 | Spend for each $2 reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Member | 10 | 2.0% | $100 |
| Bestie | 12 | 2.4% | $83.33 |
| VIPP | 14 | 2.8% | $71.43 |
The profile bonus of 1,000 points equals $2, what $100 of base spending earns. A Salon Reward Certificate is 5,000 points, or $10. The Autoship Points Payout pays $5 for every $100 of qualifying recurring Autoship spend, or 5% of that spend.
How to redeem points
Points are redeemed in blocks of 1,000, each worth $2 off, in stores, online and in the app. In a store you tell the associate before the purchase that you want to use points, and the largest saving available is applied automatically. Large redemptions need identity verification. Online you log in and request the redemption in your cart or at checkout, up to the order total.
Points can be combined with other discounts and offers unless an offer says otherwise, and the terms take them off the transaction before any discount. Points can't pay for gift cards, veterinary services, taxes, tips or shipping, can't be exchanged for cash and can't be used on Autoship orders or on delivery marketplace orders. Points earned in a transaction can't be used in the same transaction, and points are spent on a first in, first out basis. If you return an item you paid for with points, the points are not returned to your balance.
Members can give points to PetSmart Charities, but only when PetSmart sends a donation offer, usually by email, and the member activates it. A member can't transfer points to another account.
Status tiers and perks
| Member | Bestie | VIPP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual spend | $0 to $499 | $500 to $999 | $1,000 or more |
| Points per $1 | 10 | 12 | 14 |
| Own 2X points purchase | None | 1 a year | 2 a year |
| Annual tier recognition event | No | Yes | Yes |
| Holiday gift | No | No | Yes |
| Members-only in-store pricing, personalized offers, free ship to home on orders $49+, pet birthday or Gotcha Day gift, partner offers, early access to sales | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Salon Reward Certificates | Up to 2 a year | Up to 2 a year | Up to 2 a year |
| Autoship: 5% off recurring orders and the Autoship Points Payout | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Autoship: tier bonus points stack | No | +2 per $1 | +4 per $1 |
Tier status is based on calendar year spend and is awarded within 24 hours of crossing a threshold. Gift cards, purchases at an affiliated veterinarian's office, purchases made before joining or without identifying yourself and marketplace orders from unlinked accounts don't count toward the threshold, and returns are deducted. A member who reaches Bestie in June 2024, for example, holds it to 31 December 2025, and has to spend $500 again in 2025 to keep it through 2026. If you make two purchases in a day and cross the threshold in the first, the second doesn't earn the bonus.
The terms also let PetSmart grant tier status for reasons other than spending. In-store adopters can claim VIPP by activating a "Claim VIPP" offer after the adoption, and the offer stays in the account until the end of the month after the adoption. VIPP then lasts for the year of the adoption and the year after.
Salon Reward Certificates and the Autoship Points Payout
Salon Reward Certificates. Every member can earn up to two 5,000-point certificates a calendar year by booking a bath or groom in two consecutive months. The certificate arrives in the following month, must be claimed by activating the offer and expires at the end of that calendar month, with no reissue. Walk-in services and sessions that use a prepaid grooming package don't count. The points can be used on any merchandise or service except gift cards and veterinary services. PetSmart also gives one free Doggie Day Camp session for every 10 bought.
Autoship Points Payout. Members with an active Autoship subscription get 5% off recurring orders and earn base points and tier bonuses on them. For every $100 of qualifying recurring spend, which excludes discounts, tax and shipping and leaves out the first order, they receive 2,500 limited-time bonus points ($5). PetSmart's FAQ shows 2,500 points at $100 to $199, 5,000 at $200 to $299, and so on up to 10,000 at $400 to $499. The payout appears as an offer card on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, and must be activated, and the points redeemed, within three months. Spend that doesn't reach the next $100 rolls over. A member who goes more than 7 days without an active Autoship subscription forfeits accumulated payouts, and returns reduce the spend that counts.
The fine print
- Points expire. Each point expires at the end of the twelfth month after it was earned, so points earned on 5 December 2024 expire on 31 December 2025. The terms add that expiry can vary by market.
- Bonus points are short-lived. Bonus point promotions can carry shorter expiry than standard points, and the terms add that they are calculated at the base rate, whatever the member's tier.
- Annual cap. An account can earn up to 2.5 million points a calendar year, which the FAQ says is worth $5,000, and PetSmart reserves the right to set a maximum.
- Returns reduce points. Points earned on a returned item, including bonus points, are removed, and the balance can go negative.
- Points have no cash value. The terms say points are not the member's property, can't be redeemed for cash and don't carry value, and that PetSmart can change the program, the conversion ratio and the expiry policy at any time without notice, even where that affects points already earned.
- Cancelling forfeits points. Closing an account, or revocation for abuse or fraud, forfeits unused points.
- One account. Each person can hold one account, and each email address can have one. Duplicate accounts can be merged through Customer Care, though points may not all transfer.
What stands out about Treats Rewards
Tiers add a little, and status does the rest. The base earn is the same for everyone, and the Bestie and VIPP bonuses are 2 and 4 extra points per $1. In money terms, VIPP returns 2.8% against 2.0% for a Member, so $1,000 of spending at the VIPP rate earns $8 more than at the base rate (our arithmetic). What the tiers change more is the experience: a recognition event, a holiday gift, extra 2X purchases and the sense of a status worth keeping.
Services carry their own rewards. Grooming, boarding and training count toward points and tier spend, and the Salon Reward Certificate, which asks for a visit two months running, is aimed at turning one-off bookings into a routine. Two certificates a year are worth $20 (our arithmetic), which is the same as the base points on $1,000 of spending.
A route to the top tier that isn't spending. Adopting a pet in a store unlocks VIPP, so the highest status goes to the behaviour PetSmart most wants to be known for.
Bonuses are timed, and most need a click. The Autoship payout must be used within three months, Salon certificates last a calendar month, own-2X purchases are activated by the member, and most offers need activating.
Autoship points can't pay for Autoship. The payout is excluded from Autoship orders, so members spend it on other purchases, which sends them back to the store or the one-time cart.
What members should know going in:
- Some purchases can't be paid for with points. Redemption excludes veterinary services, gift cards, Autoship orders and marketplace orders.
- A discount reduces what you earn. Points are earned on the price after coupons and sale reductions.
- PetSmart doesn't publish how many members sit in each tier, and the last membership figure it gave was more than 67 million loyalty members at the April 2024 relaunch.
Is Treats Rewards worth joining?
If you shop at PetSmart at all, yes: it costs nothing, and the one-time profile bonus is worth $2. An occasional shopper gets members-only in-store pricing and offers, and a pet birthday gift, and should note that points expire after a year. A regular shopper earns about 2% back at the base rate and up to 2.8% at VIPP, and the personalized offers are where the value rises, so activate them before checking out. People who groom at PetSmart should aim for the two Salon certificates ($20 a year). Autoship customers earn 5% off, base points and the payout, which our arithmetic puts at 5% of qualifying spend. If most of your pet spending is on veterinary care or on DoorDash orders you haven't linked, little of it will count.
What Shopify brands can learn from Treats Rewards
Treats Rewards is built for a household that buys the same things again and again, and several of its mechanics carry over to a Shopify brand:
- State the exchange rate in one line. "10 points per $1, 1,000 points for $2" lets every member work out they get 2% back. Choose a rate a shopper can calculate, and show it in the program's first screen. Mage lets you set earning rates and fixed-amount rewards, and flexible rewards that let customers slide points against a value range.
- Keep tiers on a calendar year and make the bonus small. A modest extra on a common base keeps the program cheap to run and lets non-monetary perks carry the status. In Mage, VIP tier progress can run on a calendar year, a rolling year or lifetime, and tiers can carry points multipliers such as 1.5x, 2x or 3x.
- Reward the routine, not just the sale. A certificate for visits two months in a row pays for a habit. In Mage, punch cards on higher plans pay a bonus after, for example, 2 orders in 30 days or 3 orders over $100.
- Pay subscribers a periodic bonus. The Autoship payout turns recurring orders into a quarterly lump sum. In Mage, subscription milestones award a one-time bonus when a renewal count is reached, using a supported subscription app, and Points Drops add a scheduled bonus to a customer segment or VIP tier.
If you're building a points and tiers loyalty program on Shopify, Mage covers the structure above: points with fixed-amount rewards, VIP tiers on amount spent, points earned or number of orders, tier multipliers, punch cards, subscription milestones, Points Drops and configurable points expiry.

Frequently asked questions
Do PetSmart Treats Rewards points expire? Yes. Each point expires at the end of the twelfth month after it was earned.
How many points do I need for $10 off at PetSmart? 5,000 points. Points are redeemed in blocks of 1,000 for $2, so $10 takes 5,000, which a Member earns by spending $500.
Do I earn points on grooming and other PetSmart services? Yes. Grooming Salon, PetsHotel with Doggie Day Camp and Dog Training earn 10 points per $1. Veterinary services don't earn points and can't be paid for with points.
How do I get VIPP status without spending $1,000? Adopt a pet in a PetSmart store and activate the Claim VIPP offer in your Treats Rewards account, which lasts until the end of the month after the adoption. VIPP then covers the year of the adoption and the year after.
Does PetSmart give a gift for my pet's birthday? Yes. Members who add a pet's birthday or Gotcha Day to their profile receive an email going into that month with a gift, at most one per month. Members who aren't opted in to marketing emails can find it in the Offers section of the account.
Can I earn Treats Rewards points on DoorDash or Instacart? Yes, if you link your Treats Rewards account on the marketplace before ordering. Points can take up to 7 days to appear, and you can't redeem points on marketplace orders.
